TO DE-STRESS, EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Most of us know we should pay more attention to our nutrition, but it’s hard to break the burger and fries habits of a lifetime. Research by a Warrington chiropractor is finding more evidence, however, that good nutrition habits can affect many areas of our physical and mental health. Now there’s research that shows loading up on the fruits and vegetables can help you lower your stress levels. A recent study carried out in Australia involving 60,000 people aged 45 and older found that eating more fruits and vegetables can reduce stress.

The numbers are pretty impressive. The study referred to by a Central Bucks chiropractic office showed that folks who ate 3-4 servings of vegetables every day had a 12 percent lower risk of stress than those who ate 0-1 servings daily. The results are even more striking when you focus on women. Females who ate 5-7 daily servings of fruit and vegetables had 23 percent lower stress than their counterparts who ate 0-1 servings each day.

The study clearly shows that eating fruits and vegetables every day plays a role in stress reduction, but perhaps the biggest surprise is that as you increase the amount, it keeps lowering your stress level. People who ate 5-7 daily servings of fruit and vegetables had lower stress than those who ate 3-4 servings, and the ones who ate 3-4 servings had lower stress than the ones who ate only 0-1 servings daily. However, it appears that there is an upper limit — if you increase your fruit and vegetable intake to more than 7 times a day, it does not lower your stress levels any further.

The bottom line is that if you want a good remedy for the high levels of stress in today’s world, eat more fruit and veggies!

TIPS FOR BACK AND SHOULDER HEALTH

There’s no question that Americans lead sedentary lifestyles, and that we spend way too much time sitting in front of our computers and TVs, or hunched over our phones. Because of this, we can sometimes experience back and shoulder problems that cause pain and limit our mobility.

upperback pain

Here are some tips for dealing with back and shoulder pain when it comes.

. Back pain. Sitting at a desk that is too low or too high can often cause strain on the back. The solution is to use ergonomically designed chairs and desks that you can adjust for the least amount of strain, but you should also make sure you get up and walk around at regular intervals throughout the day. Sitting for long periods has been proven to cause many health problems says a local chiropractor.  Another remedy is to strengthen your core muscles through planking-type exercises.

. Shoulder pain. Our shoulders are subject to a lot of stress in our daily movements, and they can be vulnerable to strain and injury. Regular stretching exercises for the shoulders and pectoral muscles will enhance shoulder rotation and lessen pain. Making sure your spine is flexible and mobile (which a warrington chiropractor treatment can do) will ease the pressure on the shoulders also. Certain exercises will help, including sub scapular pushups, side lying external shoulder rotations, and the woodchop, which is a cable exercise.

Our modern lifestyle is definitely causing more pain and discomfort in certain parts of our bodies, and we need to pay attention to these signals and address them in order to get relief before the problem gets worse and wreaks havoc on our daily life.

SPEAK UP ABOUT ALTERNATIVE CARE

November 13, 2015 Leave a comment

Good communication is essential between patients and their medical providers. In fact, it can slow down or block the progress of treatment if patients don’t communicate well with the people who are treating them. That’s why it’s disturbing to read of a new study released by Kaiser Permanente Northwest, a group model health maintenance organization based in Portland, Ore., that found a third of acupuncture users and 42 percent of chiropractic users in the study did not tell their regular doctors about the care. This adds up to a lot of patients, since the study also found that of the 6,068 chronic pain patients who responded to a questionnaire, 47 percent reported using chiropractic care, 32 percent said they used acupuncture, and 21 percent used both. Only 42 percent said they used neither acupuncture nor chiropractic.

Doylestown Alternative Therapy

This study shows that a lot of patients are turning to alternative therapies, such as those offered by a Warrington PA chiropractor to deal with their chronic pain, but the bad news is many of them are not telling their primary doctors about it. For medical care to work effectively, patients need to keep all the members of their treatment team in the loop. It’s the best way to coordinate care and make sure nothing is missed. Another reason for speaking up about alternative therapies like chiropractic is that doctors can sometimes offer advice about submitting these procedures for insurance payment. Insurance companies are more willing to pay for alternative treatments from a Warrington chiropractor these days, but many patients don’t know that, and pay the full cost of care themselves.

The lesson is, speak up! Let your primary care doctor know if you’re seeing a Warrington chiropractor.

Targeted Treatment Produces Better Results For Patients

Back pain comes in many forms, and in order to treat it effectively medical professionals need to do a thorough prognostic screening. That’s the conclusion of a study published recently in the UK and reported in the medical journal The Lancet.

In this study researchers divided patients into two groups: one group would receive back pain treatment that was targeted to their particular type of back pain, while the other group received non-targeted treatment. The patients in the targeted-care group were evaluated based on their level of risk. Their evaluation was used to tailor a treatment program, including different levels of physiological and psychological treatment depending on their risk assessment.

The result? Not surprisingly, patients with targeted treatment showed much more significant improvement than those without targeted care. Specifically, the targeted care from a warrington chiropractor took fewer days off from work due to back pain, they functioned better physically and emotionally, they had higher quality of life, and they had reduced disability due to back pain.

There were economic benefits as well. The patients of a warrington pa chiropractor with targeted treatment had fewer wasted visits to doctors and other medical practitioners in the long term, which saved them money on their medical bills.

The study concluded that a good prognostic screening program would save time and money, and give medium and high risk patients faster relief from their back pain.

If this advice is followed in the medical profession, it will be a benefit for back pain sufferers.

Warrington PA Chiropractor Helps Treat Back Injuries From Golf

Golf is a game that has developed from its origins on the windswept moors of Scotland in the 15th century to a worldwide sport that millions of people play. Although golf is an enjoyable sport that ordinary people can play, it can also cause injuries. That may sound funny in a sport that has no physical contact, running, or lifting of heavy weights, but it’s true. The reason is that swinging a golf club puts a great deal of stress on the spine, and some golfers can get painful back injuries from improper golf swings.

It happens even to top flight pros like Tiger Woods, who has had ongoing problems with back injuries. These injuries can be very painful, and if untreated can cause people to give up a game that they love.

So what do you do if you get a back injury from golfing? One good solution is to see a warrington pa chiropractor. Chiropractors are experts at treating back problems, and they have lots of experience in healing sports-related injuries. A good warrington chiropractor will make adjustments to the spine that allow the injured area to heal naturally, without the use of pain medications. With just a few treatments the pain will diminish, and in most cases the golfer will be feeling back to normal in a short time.

The other way chiropractic treatments can help golfers is by making adjustments on a regular basis to prevent injuries from happening. With regular adjustments the golfer will have increased strength and mobility along the spinal column, and this will protect him or her from injuries during the course of play.

Warrington PA Chiropractor Shares Basic Ab Exercises

February 4, 2015 Leave a comment

Dr. McQuaite, a Warington PA chiropractor, shares some basic ab and core exercises. Make sure the lower back stays well supported. Relax for a moment between exercises. Allow enough time for a good stretch/cool-down period when you are done.

Basic Crunch
Lay down on the floor, knees bent, hands resting on your thighs, feet and lower back pressing into the ground. Squeeze the abdominals as you lift your upper body toward your knees. Lower. Your hands will naturally move up and down your leg. Exhale up, inhale down. Repeat 20 times.

Reverse Crunch
Press the hands into the floor at your side. Raise your legs so that they are perpendicular to the ground. Now, lift your buttocks an inch or two off of the floor, keeping shoulders to the floor. Lower slowly, concentrating on the lower ab region. Repeat 15 times.

Cross
Lay on your back, knees bent. Use your hands to support the head, thumbs right behind your ears. Keeping your right shoulder on the ground, twist the left side of your body up and over, pointing your left shoulder toward your right knee. Lower. Repeat 15 times each side.

Crunch with Alternate Twist
Same position, knees bent, hands supporting the head. Crunch up; twist your body to the right; twist your body to the left; and crunch forward again. Release, but do not lower your head all the way to the ground. Repeat this series of fluid movements 10 times.

Doylestown Chiropractor Discusses Cymbalta Commercial

I was home the other day for lunch and a Cymbalta commercial came on.  During the commercial, the voice over said how effective Cymbalta was for chronic musculoskeletal pain, which I was not aware it was used for.

cymbalta

However 2 other things that stood out the most to me was that the recommended dosage was once a day and the long list of side effects.  According to their website:

Cymbalta should generally be administered once daily without regard to meals.

In clinical studies, the most common side effects identified in people taking Cymbalta included:

  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Sleepiness
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Decreased appetite
  • Increased sweating

ALSO:

Cymbalta may be associated with serious side effects. Call your healthcare provider right away or seek emergency help if you experience any of the following:

  • Itching, right upper-belly pain, dark urine, yellow skin/eyes, or unexplained flu-like symptoms, which may be signs of life-threatening liver problems. Severe liver problems, some fatal, have been reported
  • High fever, confusion, stiff muscles, muscle twitching, or racing heart rate, which may be signs of serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition
  • Abnormal bleeding, especially if Cymbalta is taken with aspirin, NSAID pain relievers (like ibuprofen or naproxen), or blood thinners
  • Serious, possibly life-threatening skin reactions, which may include skin blisters, peeling rash, mouth sores, hives, or other allergic reactions
  • Abnormal mood (mania), which may include greatly increased energy, severe trouble sleeping, racing thoughts, talking more or faster than usual, and reckless behavior
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Decreased blood pressure upon standing, which can cause dizziness or fainting, mostly when first starting or increasing the dose. Cymbalta can also increase blood pressure. Your healthcare provider should check your blood pressure prior to and while taking Cymbalta
  • Headache, weakness or feeling unsteady, confusion, problems concentrating, or memory problems, which may be signs of low sodium levels in the blood. Elderly people may be at greater risk
  • Problems with urination, including decreased flow or inability to pass any urine
  • Changes in appetite or weight. Children and adolescents should have height and weight monitored

I know in my Doylestown chiropractic practice, that if I were to suggest that someone come see me everyday for their back pain AND I told them that you may experience any or all of the listed side effects, people would think that I am crazy!

So my question is, why are so many willing to take a prescription drug everyday, with this long list of potentially deadly side effects, yet so many balk at seeing a chiropractor 1-2 times a month?  At my office we have been helping the residents of Doylestown, Jamison, Warrington, Chalfont and the entire Central Bucks area rediscover a life without pain for over 15.  If you want to get off that medication train and start a non-surgical, drugless approach to your pain, give my office a call today.
