Doylestown Chiropractor Discusses Cymbalta Commercial

I was home the other day for lunch and a Cymbalta commercial came on.  During the commercial, the voice over said how effective Cymbalta was for chronic musculoskeletal pain, which I was not aware it was used for.

cymbalta

However 2 other things that stood out the most to me was that the recommended dosage was once a day and the long list of side effects.  According to their website:

Cymbalta should generally be administered once daily without regard to meals.

In clinical studies, the most common side effects identified in people taking Cymbalta included:

  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Sleepiness
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Decreased appetite
  • Increased sweating

ALSO:

Cymbalta may be associated with serious side effects. Call your healthcare provider right away or seek emergency help if you experience any of the following:

  • Itching, right upper-belly pain, dark urine, yellow skin/eyes, or unexplained flu-like symptoms, which may be signs of life-threatening liver problems. Severe liver problems, some fatal, have been reported
  • High fever, confusion, stiff muscles, muscle twitching, or racing heart rate, which may be signs of serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition
  • Abnormal bleeding, especially if Cymbalta is taken with aspirin, NSAID pain relievers (like ibuprofen or naproxen), or blood thinners
  • Serious, possibly life-threatening skin reactions, which may include skin blisters, peeling rash, mouth sores, hives, or other allergic reactions
  • Abnormal mood (mania), which may include greatly increased energy, severe trouble sleeping, racing thoughts, talking more or faster than usual, and reckless behavior
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Decreased blood pressure upon standing, which can cause dizziness or fainting, mostly when first starting or increasing the dose. Cymbalta can also increase blood pressure. Your healthcare provider should check your blood pressure prior to and while taking Cymbalta
  • Headache, weakness or feeling unsteady, confusion, problems concentrating, or memory problems, which may be signs of low sodium levels in the blood. Elderly people may be at greater risk
  • Problems with urination, including decreased flow or inability to pass any urine
  • Changes in appetite or weight. Children and adolescents should have height and weight monitored

I know in my Doylestown chiropractic practice, that if I were to suggest that someone come see me everyday for their back pain AND I told them that you may experience any or all of the listed side effects, people would think that I am crazy!

So my question is, why are so many willing to take a prescription drug everyday, with this long list of potentially deadly side effects, yet so many balk at seeing a chiropractor 1-2 times a month?  At my office we have been helping the residents of Doylestown, Jamison, Warrington, Chalfont and the entire Central Bucks area rediscover a life without pain for over 15.  If you want to get off that medication train and start a non-surgical, drugless approach to your pain, give my office a call today.

Doylestown Chiropractor Says “Thanks!”

November 16, 2012 Leave a comment

As we approach Thanksgiving, I wanted to take a moment to say “THANK YOU” to some very special people.  First of all to my fantastic team at the office. There is no way I could this without you.  You truly make it enjoyable to come to work, if you can even call what we do work!  Second to all of our wonderful patients!  I am truly blessed that you have trusted me with your health and since becoming patients, I can honestly say you have all become friends. Next I would like to thank the Central Bucks community for their overwhelming response to our office. Our office policy has and always will be to offer affordable chiropractic care to the community.  Good insurance or no insurance, it doesn’t matter to us and it shouldn’t matter to you.  While we do work with most major insurances, our care for you is not based on what an insurance company may or not pay or what benefits you have.  If your care is based on those factors, what happens when those benefits run out?  Will you get lesser care or no care at all?  At our office, that is never a concern.  With so many health care choices, it is a honor that you have considered us and a privilege to help you.   Finally to my family, who as always stood by me through thick and thin, I love you all.

 HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Doylestown Chiropractor Reviews New Study On Manipulation and Athletic Performance

September 27, 2012 Leave a comment

Dr. Jeff McQuaite, a Doylestown Chiropractor, is pleased to share this new study that shows the benefit of manipulative therapy and how it can have a positive effect on athletic performance, especially football players.

This recent study was performed at Virginia Tech and published in the Journal of American Osteopathic Association.  The study consisted of 115 Virginia Tech Football players receiving manipulative therapy, similar to those given at Dr. McQuiate’s Doylestown chiropractic office, over the course of 2 seasons.  The adjustments were given pregame in order to restore maximal, pain-free movement of the musculoskeletal system and to enhance neuromuscular function.  After each game, the coaching staff “graded” the players by using a standard coaching algorithm.  The pre-competition manipulative treatment was positively associated with improved performance among both offensive and defensive Virginia Tech football players.

Previous research has already shown that regular chiropractic adjustments can prevent injury in athletes, and this new research suggests it may actually improve their athletic performance.  This is why approximately 75% of NCAA Division 1, top 20 teams, 66% of NCAA Division 1 AA top 20 teams and 100% of NFL teams have a chiropractor as a part of their training staff.

If you would like to learn more about how Dr. McQuaite and his team at Azzatori Chiropractic-Doylestown can help you and your players attain their athletic goals, please contact him at his Doylestown chiropractic office.

Doylestown Chiropractor asks “Have You Tried Just About Everything For Your Allergies?”

April 17, 2012 115 comments

Wheezing, sniffling & sneezing.

No, these are not the dwarfs, but just a few of the many symptoms that local allergy sufferers experience this time of year.

The earth comes alive, bursting with new growth and the wind is spreading the news. As spring blossoms, the pollen will flow and walk in the park or a play date with your dog or cat can result in red itchy eyes, nasal congestion and overall awfulness.  Commercials bombard us with idyllic images of allergy medication from pills to nasal sprays.

More Pills Are Not The Solution

A common treatment for allergies is the ‘take some medication and wait and see’ method.

While this may be necessary for temporary relief of severe symptoms, using them long term is no way to live. Some of the more common drugs given: Benadryl, Zyrtec, Allegra & Claritin all of which have serious side effects, including drowsiness, fatigue, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, among others.

The Likely Cause Of Your Problem

I am Dr. Jeff McQuaite of Azzatori Chiropractic-Doylestown and I’ve been helping people with allergies for more than 15 years.

You may question why it is that other people appear to be so unaffected by the environment, while your body reacts, or rather overreacts to it. It’s a valid question. Allergic responses are caused by a hyperactive immune system that “freaks out” when confronted with commonplace foods and other products such as pollen, dust, dander, shellfish or nuts.

Have you ever wondered if a chiropractor can help with your allergies? The fact is that many people have experienced relief from their allergy symptoms after receiving a chiropractic treatment. The reason for this is because chiropractic manipulation affects the complete nervous system, including the autoimmune system. When there is an impedance in the nervous system, along with other problems, the autoimmune system, whose job it is to assist us in adapting and responding appropriately to our environment, can become under-active or overactive. The problem is the latter when it comes to your allergies.

Because chiropractic manipulations lessen or remove disturbances in the nervous system and bring the body back into balance and harmony, the treatments provide that same balance and harmony to the auto-immune system as well. A healthy immune system reacts appropriately to supposed allergens in the environment.

By using gentle techniques, I am able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away.

For example, numerous studies have proven chiropractic’s effectiveness in helping asthma and allergies.

Robert Mendelsohn, M.D, Northwestern University Medical College:

“Traditional medicine has no cure for allergies, only treatment” and “You can depend on most doctors to largely ignore the cause … unfortunately, their treatment is often worse than the disease, especially since the relatively safe folk-measures of yesteryear have been replaced by the sophisticated, dangerous drugs of modern medicine.”

Journal of Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health, 2009:

A 7-year-old male was presented by his parents for chiropractic evaluation and possible care. The suffered from chronic colds, allergies, and asthma since the age of 5 months. At the time of initial evaluation, the patient was on a 1x/day dose of prescription Alavert for allergies and Albuterol for asthma. The patient’s illness caused him to miss approximately 1–2 days a month of school due to colds and symptoms of asthma. His parents also indicated that his health problems resulted in monthly visits to his medical doctor.

Interventions and Outcomes: The patient was cared for using  adjustments to address areas of vertebral subluxation in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral spine. Within two weeks of initiating chiropractic care, the patient was able to discontinue his allergy and asthma medications (as decided upon by his parents) and the use of his nebulizer. In the first 5 months after beginning chiropractic care, he has had only wellness checkups at the medical doctor. In the past school year, the patient has not missed any days of school due to illness.

Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, 1997:

In a study of 81 asthmatic children, 73 showed significant improvement after chiropractic adjustments; 25 of them voluntarily decreased their medication by an average of 66.5%. Several reports have shown lung volume to increase after chiropractic care. In another study of patients with chronic pulmonary disease (including bronchitis and emphysema) over 90% reported improvement in symptoms after spinal care.

Could Chiropractic Be Your Solution?

It’s time for you to find out if chiropractic will be your allergy solution. That’s no way to live, not when there could be an easy solution to your problem.  Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because of your allergies – and the pain just won’t go away!

Doylestown Chiropractor Discusses “The Only Proven Effective Treatment” for Chronic Whiplash

Dr. Jeff McQuaite, a Doylestown chiropractor asks, “you may have wondered, “If I get hurt in a Bucks County car accident, who should I go to for treatment of my whiplash problem?”

This can be quite a challenge as you have many choices available in the healthcare system ranging from drug-related approaches from anti-inflammatory over-the-counter types all the way to potentially addicting narcotic medications.  On the other side of the fence, there are nutritional based products such as vitamins and herbs as well as “alternative” or “complementary” forms of treatment such as chiropractic, exercise, and meditation, with many others in between.  Trying to figure out which approach or perhaps combined approaches would best serve your needs is truly challenging.  To help answer this question, two studies, Journal of Orthopaedic Medicine, 1999; and , Injury, 1996; reported the superiority of chiropractic management for patients with chronic whiplash, as well as which type of chronic whiplash patients responded best to the care.  The research paper begins with the comment stating, “Conventional [meaning medical] treatment of patients with whiplash symptoms is disappointing.”  In the study, 93 patients were divided into three groups consisting of:

•             Group 1: Patients with a “coat-hanger” pain distribution (neck and upper shoulders) and loss of neck range of motion (ROM), but no neurological deficits;

•             Group 2: Patients with neurological problems (arm/hand numbness and/or weakness) plus neck pain and ROM loss); and,

•             Group 3: Patients who reported severe neck pain but had normal neck ROM and no neurological losses.

The average time from injury to first treatment was 12 months and an average of 19 treatments over a 4 month time frame was utilized.  The patients were graded on a 4-point scale that described their symptoms before and after treatment.  Grade A patients were pain free;  Grade B patients reported their pain as a “nuisance;”  Grade C patients had partial activity limitations due to pain; and  Grade D patients were disabled.

Here are the results:

•             Group 1: 72% reported improvement as follows: 24% were asymptomatic, 24% improved by 2 grades, 24% by 1 grade, and 28% reported no improvement.

•             Group 2: 94% reported improvement as follows: 38% were asymptomatic, 43% improved by 2 grades, 13% by 1 grade, and 6% had no improvement.

•             Group 3: 27% reported improvement as follows: 0% were asymptomatic, 9% improved by 2 grades, 18% by 1 grade, 64% showed no improvement, and 9% got worse.

This study is very important as it illustrates how effective chiropractic care is for patients who have sustained a motor vehicle crash with a resulting whiplash injury.  It’s important to note the type of patient presentation that responded best to care had neurological complaints and associated abnormal neck range of motion.  This differs from other non-chiropractic studies where it is reported that patients with neurological dysfunction responded poorly when compared to a group similar to the Group A patient here (neck/shoulder pain, reduced neck ROM, and with normal neurological function).

All new patients will receive:

$20 Exam, X-rays & Treatment
Free 30 minute massage
Discounted massages for the month of April

Much, much more!

Dr. Jeff McQuaite has been helping the residents of Central Bucks rediscover a life without pain for over 15 years.  He has distinguished itself from other practices by offering a more wellness based approach to their health care.  “I am striving to get my patients to understand the importance of corrective care and to be more proactive than reactive in regards to their health.”  “That is why we are called a TEAM.  We Teach our patients, Educate our patients, Adjust our patients and Motivate them to be active participants in their health care.”

Dr. Jeff says that “this type of care is geared towards those individuals who are looking for a more permanent solution to chronic aches and pains.” Patients with complaints of pain in the neck, lower back and hips, or even those with recurring headaches and dizziness, are given a comprehensive chiropractic program that is customized to their specific needs with the end goal of long-term recovery.

It all starts off with high frequency x-ray imaging where the doctor takes a close look at the state of your spine and compare your spine’s shape and form to that of a normal healthy spine. This allows him to focus in on the main problem areas. The gentle treatments offered at his office consists of conservative chiropractic adjustments, traction, ice/heat therapy, massage and other rehabilitative methods in order to slowly but steadily bring your body back to healthy alignment. The doctor will customize the treatment based on the individual and will also offer life style modification, exercises and stretching techniques that the patients can do at home to further along the process.

Doylestown Chiropractor Gives Healthy Tips For Halloween

October 29, 2010 Leave a comment

With the chance to dress up in costume and stock up on sweets, Halloween is the highlight of the year for many kids — from toddlers to teens.

But since it’s high season for candy, it can also be an exasperating time for parents who encourage kids to eat healthy foods and make sweets a limited part of a balanced and nutritious diet.

For health-conscious parents, Halloween can be tricky.  Do you set limits? Do you let kids decide how much to eat? There isn’t just one right answer. Instead, use your best judgment given what you know about your child’s personality and eating habits.

On the one hand, you want to let kids indulge and enjoy the holiday. On the other, you don’t want to undermine all the work you do the rest of the year maintaining a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. And you don’t want to confuse kids with mixed messages.

“Building a healthy lifestyle for your family means making smart choices 365 days a year,” said Anita Harvey, executive director of the YMCA’s Broadway branch, “and Halloween is a great opportunity to focus your family’s attention on physical activity and eating habits and to demonstrate that ‘everything in moderation’ doesn’t mean it’s OK to eat candy until you’re sick to your stomach.”

Use your best judgment given what you know about your child’s personality and eating habits. Before kids go trick-or-treating, try to serve a healthy meal so they’re not hungry when the candy starts coming in.

Kids who generally eat just a couple of pieces and save the rest might be trusted to decide how much to eat. But if your child tends to overdo it, consider setting limits.

Here are some more tips for handling the Halloween treats:

  • Know how much candy your child has collected and store it somewhere other than the child’s room. Having it so handy can be an irresistible temptation for many kids.
  • Consider being somewhat lenient about candy eating on Halloween, within reason, and talk about how the rest of the candy will be handled. Candy and snacks shouldn’t get in the way of kids eating healthy meals.
  • If a child is overweight — or you’d just like to reduce the Halloween stash — consider buying back some or all of the remaining Halloween candy. This acknowledges the candy belongs to the child and provides a treat in the form of a little spending money.
  • Be a role model by eating Halloween candy in moderation yourself. To help avoid temptation, buy your candy at the last minute and get rid of any leftovers.
  • Encourage your child to be mindful of the amount of candy and snacks eaten — and to stop before feeling full or sick.
  • Just because it’s Halloween doesn’t mean that all of the treats must be chocolate and sugar-loaded. Alternative treats include pretzels, granola bars, raisins and juice boxes.

Many parents said that after letting kids indulge in some treats right after trick-or-treating, they limit their kids to a certain number of pieces each day or put the candy stash out of reach and out of sight. Then kids have to ask for it — that is, if they remember that it’s there!
