Back To School Backpack Safety Tips

As another school year is upon us, and parents and students alike are making their back to school lists, Dr. Jeff is reminding his patients that back-to-school is tough enough. Your child’s backpack shouldn’t make it tougher.

Dr. Jeff says “In my Doylestown chiropractic practice, I have seen more and more elementary and middle school aged children who are complaining about back, neck and shoulder pain.”  “The first question I typically ask is do you carry a backpack to school and almost 100% of the time the answer is yes.”


This back pain trend among younger students isn’t surprising when you consider the amount of weight they carry in their backpacks, and usually slung over one shoulder.  Some of the statistics are outstanding:

According to US Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2013, over 14,000 students sought medical treatment for injuries, ranging from sprain/strains to dislocations and fractures.  Another study from the University of California showed that 64% of students between 11-15 reported back pain from their backpacks and 21% of them had pain for more than 6 months.

Dr. Jeff says “A lot of these problems can be addressed by using proper body mechanics.  While they may not be “cool”, it will help prevent the possibility of long term damage.”


In an effort to cut down on the number of these injuries, Dr. McQuaite offers parents the following backpack safety advice:

  1. Never let a child carry more than 10% of his or her body weight. A heavier backpack will cause the child to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight. In our office, we have seen backpacks weighing more than 40% of the child’s weight.
  2. Load heaviest items closest to the child’s back and arrange books and materials to prevent them from sliding.
  3. Always wear both well-padded shoulder straps. Wearing only one strap can cause a child to lean to one side, curving the spine and causing pain or discomfort.
  4. Adjust the shoulder straps so that the pack fits snugly to the child’s back. The bottom of the pack should rest in the curve of the lower back, never more than four inches below the child’s waistline.
  5. Use the waist belt, if the backpack has one, to help distribute the pack’s weight more evenly.
  6. Choose the right size pack for your child’s back, bigger isn’t necessarily better.
  7. Dr. McQuaite urges that parents don’t put a child’s name on the outside of a backpack, for safety reasons: When the child is walking home from school, you don’t want a predator to be able to call him or her by name
  8. If a student is experiencing back pain or neck soreness, consult your physician or chiropractor.


Let’s say you’ve been experiencing back pain for a while, and you’ve tried popping over the counter painkillers or anti-inflammatory agents, and perhaps you’ve even tried applying heat and ice to the affected area, but nothing has made the pain go away. So, you go to your local chiropractor and describe the problem, and the doc says, “We need to get an MRI to see what’s going on in that area. A study published a few years ago in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that  many referrals from physicians for MRI tests because of back pain were unnecessary, and the tests did not accurately diagnose the cause of the pain.

The reason is that back pain can have many causes, and some of them are hard to pinpoint on an MRI or Digital X-ray. Also, many times these instruments are so sensitive they show abnormalities even for people who have no back pain.

The problem is that if a scan shows an abnormality, your physician may recommend a surgical procedure that won’t address the real cause of the pain. Studies have actually shown that in many cases back pain goes away on its own, so surgery is not necessary.

The best approach is to try non-invasive treatments first, like chiropractic care or physical therapy.  Yoga, massage, acupuncture, and Tai Chi, among other things, can alleviate your pain and make a difference in your back health.

Modern medical science has many amazing tools, but just remember that they are not perfect.


Most of us know we should pay more attention to our nutrition, but it’s hard to break the burger and fries habits of a lifetime. Research by a Warrington chiropractor is finding more evidence, however, that good nutrition habits can affect many areas of our physical and mental health. Now there’s research that shows loading up on the fruits and vegetables can help you lower your stress levels. A recent study carried out in Australia involving 60,000 people aged 45 and older found that eating more fruits and vegetables can reduce stress.


The numbers are pretty impressive. The study referred to by a Central Bucks chiropractic office showed that folks who ate 3-4 servings of vegetables every day had a 12 percent lower risk of stress than those who ate 0-1 servings daily. The results are even more striking when you focus on women. Females who ate 5-7 daily servings of fruit and vegetables had 23 percent lower stress than their counterparts who ate 0-1 servings each day.

The study clearly shows that eating fruits and vegetables every day plays a role in stress reduction, but perhaps the biggest surprise is that as you increase the amount, it keeps lowering your stress level. People who ate 5-7 daily servings of fruit and vegetables had lower stress than those who ate 3-4 servings, and the ones who ate 3-4 servings had lower stress than the ones who ate only 0-1 servings daily. However, it appears that there is an upper limit — if you increase your fruit and vegetable intake to more than 7 times a day, it does not lower your stress levels any further.


The bottom line is that if you want a good remedy for the high levels of stress in today’s world, eat more fruit and veggies!
